On June 28, Wangwang stayed with her three unweaned puppies and endured about an hour of abuse where she was.
Wire bound her; a wooden stick came down again and again. Finally, accelerant was poured over her and a fire was lit. Based on information that has circulated and been preserved and shared by internet users, she never ran away during that hour—the three puppies were still beside her.
In footage uploaded online by those who abused her, she did not bare her teeth, growl, bite, or fight back. She knelt low, lay down, turned her back, and tucked her tail: every plea a dog could make, she made with her body.
Her name was Wangwang.

After what happened to Wangwang, many people kept sharing, compiling, and translating information. I assumed that because so many people were talking about it, everyone must already know.
Then I asked ten people around me over three days and found that not one of them knew Wangwang.
That was not a survey, but it showed me the circle drawn by algorithms: the same news keeps returning to those who already care, making us think everyone has seen it. Outside that circle, Wangwang's name may not have arrived even once.
That is why we made this page.
This page does not assume you already know. It begins with who Wangwang was, shows how she and her three puppies lived, what happened on June 28, and whom she still tried to reach at the end of her life.

She lived in a village, fed and cared for by kind residents. She was a mother dog who trusted people and would come close to them on her own.

The space was so narrow that it could barely hold one mother dog and three puppies.
Dogs normally try to relieve themselves away from where they rest and raise their young. But in the photographs, even the waste could only remain near the opening, waiting for a kind feeder to help clean it.
Wangwang had kept her own and her puppies' lives within that small patch of ground as much as possible, disturbing almost no one.
She had made her own presence so small.
On June 28, she endured prolonged abuse near the drainage opening where her puppies were.
She bent her front legs, pressed the front half of her body to the ground, turned sideways or away, tucked her tail, and lowered her head. She showed no aggressive posture and did not bite anyone.
Compiled accounts say Wangwang was struck more than ninety times with a large wooden stick. One preserved image-and-text record says that in just ninety seconds of video, the stick came down fifty times. Even then, she wore what looked like a smile and continued to plead with friendliness and submission.
In footage uploaded online by those who abused her, Wangwang did not bare her teeth, growl, bite, or fight back. She kept her body low, turned away, tucked her tail, then looked back with what looked like a smile.
She wanted to live. To live, she gave up every defense and all dignity, leaving only submission and pleading.
Later, an accelerant was applied to her and she was set on fire.
After the fire reached her body, she still moved toward a puppy lying on the ground. She tried to come close to her puppies, then withdrew again and again. Her movements in the footage suggest that she may have feared the fire on her body would burn them too.
A preserved account of the incident says that her eyes were gouged out during the abuse. At the end of her life, she still kept her head down, searching for her puppies with her nose and crawling toward them.
She never fought back, from beginning to end.

Before June 28, Wangwang had a whole life
If we know Wangwang only from footage of the incident, we will remember only what she endured.
But Wangwang did not begin to exist on the day she was hurt. She was once a dog not yet a year old, close to people and trusting of them; she also became a mother who watched over her puppies.

According to preserved sources so far, Wangwang began hiding about a month before the incident and gave birth to three puppies on June 14. These images show the place where she lived in her last month, her puppies, and the timeline.

June 28: the hour she endured
From staying by the opening where her puppies were, to lowering her body and turning away in plea, to crawling toward them at the end of her life, the following reconstructs what happened to Wangwang in order, from footage and image-and-text records that have circulated and been preserved by internet users.
01 | She had already returned to the opening where her puppies were
Wangwang had no real home.
She had tucked herself and her three unweaned puppies into a narrow, damp space beside a drainage opening, enclosed by stones, concrete, and weeds.
When it happened, she was still near the opening. Danger had come close, but she did not leave the three puppies who were still nursing.
02 | Her movement was restricted and she was attacked for a long time
Footage and image-and-text records now circulating and preserved indicate that wire was wound around Wangwang's neck, restricting her movement.
One preserved post records that before she was set on fire, she had already been beaten for more than fifty minutes.
Circulating image-and-text accounts of the same event describe a nailed wooden plank being replaced by a steel pipe after it broke, and say Wangwang's leg was broken during the abuse.
The wooden plank, steel pipe, duration, and leg injury are accounts from sources. What can be directly seen in the footage is that she could no longer leave freely, and the attack had not stopped.
03 | When the pain became unbearable, she hid her head
A preserved image-and-text record says that Wangwang at one point hid her head beneath a tarpaulin, leaving only her body outside to endure the attack.
She did not lunge, bite, or fight back.
She made herself smaller still, as if waiting for it all to end soon.
She pleaded on her knees, and it still did not stop
In preserved footage, Wangwang bent her front legs and lowered the front half of her body toward the ground.
Again and again, she turned sideways or away, tucked her tail, and lowered her head. She did not face the danger directly and showed no aggressive posture.
These actions conveyed very strong signals of appeasement, submission, and pleading:
I surrender.
I am not a threat.
I will not hurt you.
Please, do not hit me again.
She even offered her back—the most vulnerable and least defensible part of her body.
Even while being beaten, Wangwang looked back with what looked like a smile. It was not that she did not know pain. Throughout the footage, she did not bare her teeth, growl, or lunge. Again and again, in the gentlest way she knew, she seemed to hope the other person would understand:
I will not hurt you. Please do not hit me again.
She did everything a dog could do to express submission and pleading.
But the harm did not stop.
The moment before she was set on fire, she was still turned away from people
Circulating and preserved image-and-text records say that liquid was poured over Wangwang and white accelerant material was placed on her body.
When the attack paused briefly, she did not use the chance to bite anyone.
She turned her back, lowered her head, and glanced sideways behind her.
Turning one's back to someone means letting down one's guard and trusting; lowering one's head and not daring to look directly signals appeasement and pleading. Wangwang did both at once, as if saying:
I am good.
I trust you.
Please, do not hit me again.
Yet the next moment, she was set on fire.
Fire suddenly surrounded Wangwang.
In preserved footage, she jumped up and moved in extreme pain, then approached a puppy lying on the ground.
She did not simply run away into the distance.
She moved toward her puppy and first touched the puppy with her paw. The puppy did not move, so she nudged it with her nose and mouth. When the puppy still did not respond, she moved anxiously back and forth beside it.
She also tried to turn back and free herself from the wire around her neck, but could not.
She wanted to come close to her puppies.
But the fire on her body was also coming close to them.
She could only come close, pull away, come close again, and pull away again.
Her movements in preserved footage show that Wangwang still wanted to return to her puppies, but may also have been trying to keep the fire on her body from burning them.
One preserved post says the fire continued on Wangwang's body for more than twenty minutes; this duration currently comes from that source's account.
Afterward, she lay collapsed nearby.
At the end of her life, she still searched for her puppies with her nose
Event accounts that have circulated and been preserved say that Wangwang's eyes were gouged out during the abuse.
At the end of her life, she kept her head down and moved inch by inch toward where her puppies were.
In preserved footage, she can be seen unable to rely on her eyes to find her way, yet still keeping her head down, smelling and searching for her puppies with her nose and mouth.
In the end, she still crawled to her puppies' side.
She could no longer see. At the end of her life, she still searched inch by inch with her nose, until she returned to her puppies.
She should not be remembered only for how she died
What kind of dog was Wangwang before this?
She would come close to a person's hand on her own.
She would step between a person's legs and rest her front paws there.
She would lower the front half of her body, inviting people to play with her.
She would look up at people and show a close, relaxed expression when being petted.
She let her three newly born puppies press against her and drink milk.
The night before the incident, she was still walking the night road back to her small nest with her tail held high.
She had no real home, but she was always thinking of her puppies.
Three puppies, still unweaned, were waiting for their mother to return.
The night before, she was still happily walking back to her puppies.
She should not be remembered only for how she died.
She should also be remembered for how she trusted people, how she lived, and how she loved her puppies.
How she lived should be seen, too
Wangwang was only a little over one year old. In the preserved images from her life, she came close to people's hands on her own, invited play by their feet, and turned back to make sure her three puppies were following. That was who she was.
On June 28, about an hour of footage recorded the inhumane abuse she endured. Even while restrained and beaten, and finally with fire on her body, she did not bite anyone, fight back, or run away and leave the puppies who still needed her.
Now, more and more people around the world are speaking for Wangwang. They are not only animal-protection groups: some compile information, some translate, some create images, and some take to the streets. Many who had never been involved in animal protection saw the footage and cried for Wangwang for days.
I am not part of an animal-protection group either. Like many others, after seeing the preserved footage of about an hour, I could no longer pretend not to know.
The appeal is simple: face and take the responsibility that is due, and do not let the same abuse happen again.
Video | Remembering Wangwang while she was alive
Do not remember only what she endured at the end. These videos keep the way she was stroked, ate, came close to people, watched over her children, and walked the village road home.
She threw herself at someone's legs and put her front paws up
In just over nine seconds of close-up footage, Wangwang walks up to the person filming, rests both front paws on their legs and lifts her head towards the camera. The post reads: even after being hurt, she still trusted people, and she was a mother doing her best to guard her children.
Being stroked, she narrows her eyes and lets her tongue out
The camera is very close. Wangwang lets a hand rest on her head, relaxed, and does not pull away.
A kind villager puts down a meal for her
Wangwang lowers her head to eat vegetables and meat set on the ground outside. When she finishes, she lies down beside the bowl and still lifts her head to be stroked.
The little mother everybody loved
Someone sets a small container on the ground and Wangwang comes over on her own. She is willing to come near a human hand, and willing to trust the kindness in front of her.
The night before, she still walked back to her den with her tail held high
Wangwang walks along the village road towards the drainage hole at night. The source text records this as the last night of her life: her children were still waiting inside.
She plays affectionately at someone's feet, with stickers stuck on her head
Wangwang is still relaxed as she comes close and moves between the person's legs. But why would anyone stick little labels one after another on the top of her head and between her ears?
At night, she hurries back to her children along an empty village road
The camera follows a small dog from behind, tail held high, walking quickly ahead. The source text says that every day, after escorting her older children, Wangwang would hurry back to the underpass to look after the puppies.
